    I am Associate Professor of English Language and Translation Studies. I hold an MA by Research in English from Goldsmiths College, University of London, and a PhD in Italian Linguistics from the University of Rome ‘Sapienza’. Prior to joining the University of Roma Tre in 2009, I taught courses in English Language and Translation at ‘Sapienza’ University of Rome and at the Università per Stranieri of Siena. I currently serve as a member of the Board of the International Doctoral Programme in Studies in English Literatures, Language, and Translation, based at the Department of European, American and Intercultural Studies, Sapienza University of Rome. I am also a member of the Centre for Museum Education (Centro di Didattica Museale) and member of the scientific board of the International Master in Standards in Museum Education, Roma Tre University.

    My research focuses on a wide range of topics in English Linguistics and Translation Studies, ranging from audiovisual translation to cross-cultural pragmatics, corpus stylistics, history of English language teaching, youth language, conversational narrative, literary translation, translingualism and gender studies.

    I have published extensively within the area of Audiovisual Translation, with a focus on language varieties, retranslation, manipulation and censorship.  My current research interests include cross-cultural representation, historical approaches to AVT reception, and translator manuscript genetics. My most recent work focuses on Stanley Kubrick and film translation.

    My works-in-progress include: ‘Don’t talk out loud, you lower the IQ of the whole street’: The representation of impoliteness strategies in Sherlock (with Silvia Bruti); Audiovisual retranslation: a reception study of redubs across space and time (with Elena Di Giovanni)I am also working on a monograph entitled James Joyce, English Teacher.


    I have been the recipient of several fellowships, including, most recently:

    • a Helm Fellowship (2018-2019) to support research at the Lilly Library, Indiana University

    • a Harry Ransom Center Research Fellowship in the Humanities (2019-2020) to research at the Ransom Center, University of Texas at Austin

    Research projects and international collaborations

    I was a network member of the AHRC-funded project “Tapping the Power of Foreign Language Films: Audiovisual Translation as Cross-cultural Mediation” – (Arts and Humanities Research Council, UK). Lead Research Organisation: University of East Anglia – Principal investigator: Prof. Marie-Noelle Guillot.

    I am a member of the Research Project Inclusive Memory. Promozione e sviluppo di una memoria comune e inclusiva attraverso percorsi innovativi di didattica museale. Funded by Roma Tre University (Piano Straordinario di Sviluppo della Ricerca di Ateneo – azione sperimentale di finanziamento a progetti di ricerca innovativi e di natura interdisciplinare) (2018-2020).

    I am co-founder of the Research Centre for Audiovisual Translation and Accessibility (TRADAC – Traduzione Audiovisiva e Accessibilità), which involves researchers from different institutions in Italy and in Europe.

    I am Vice President of The James Joyce Italian Foundation.

    I am a member of the Board of Referees of the Journal of Audiovisual Translation (JAT) and of the Editorial Board of the journal Joyce Studies in Italy.

    I am a member of ESIST (European Association for Studies in Screen Translation), PALA (The Poetics and Linguistics Association), IPrA (International Pragmatics Association), ESSE (The European Society for the Study of English), AIA (Associazione Italiana di Anglistica), NECS (European Network for Cinema and Media Studies), The International James Joyce Foundation, and of The James Joyce Italian Foundation.

    I regularly collaborate with the Irish Film Festa, an international film festival with a focus on Irish cinema which takes place annually at the Casa del Cinema in Rome.
