Crossing Boundaries in American Theater and Cinema

As it came much later than European modern theater, American theater looked back, on one hand, to the prosperous Shakespearean tradition and, on the other, to the ancient Greek tragedy and satiric drama, updating themes and moods to the second half of nineteenth-century at first, and then to twentieth-century, society. Very soon (since the modernist period) American theatrical operators began experimenting with media in a rich exchange and fruitful intersections of performance and media forms, besides adaptations from fictional work and real life. A choice of canonical plays and of contemporary experimental or indie cinematic products will be examined in their intersections with past and present artistic forms.

12 CFU A. Module: Aspects of Contemporary North-American Theatre

The glamour of Jersey born actress Lillie Langtry’s tournée to America is one aspect of early twentieth-century American theater. It would soon be followed by an innovative experimental theatre with a stress on performance in the forties, the sixties, and the decades to follow. We will take into consideration Langtry’s tournées in America, K Patchen’s and J Cage’s radio play “The City Wears a Slouch Hat”, The Living Theater, the musical “Jesus Christ Superstar”, Ann Waldmann’s “Fast Speaking Woman”, Judith Thompson’s “Palace of the End”, and Brian O’ Doherty’s identity as Patrick Ireland.

An internet excursion will introduce the students to the different subjects.

    B. Module: Workshop on Translation and Revision of Texts, with the assistance of Doctor Valentina Rapetti.

A number of plays from the US and Canada concerning the theme of violence on women (such as sexual discrimination, sexual agggression, stalking) will be presented and analysed in order to involve the students in the activity of translating into/from Italian.

The module provides a brief introduction on the dramatic text, full reading and analysis of selected plays, translation and proofreading of a selection of significant scenes from:

Rebecca Gilman, “Boy Gets Girl” (Faber & Faber); Erin Shields, “If We Were Birds” (Erin Shields Paperback) (Both AVAILABLE FROM AMAZON.COM); Hannah Moscovitch, “Essay” (2008, to be supplied in class).
